Our Level 2 Hospitality & Catering students recently took part in a Bake Off Competition from the comfort of their own kitchens. They had to prepare and bake a sponge cake and then decorate it to a high standard.  The judges were Tom Hall and Bernie Byrne, Lecturers in Hospitality & Catering, and BBC Masterchef contestant Ian Samuels. The 10 entries were judged from photographs and feedback from family members.

First prize was awarded to William Jupp for his Cookies and Cream Cake. After sampling this tasty treat, William’s mother described it as ‘nice, light sponge’, with the buttercream ‘light and not too sweet’. His sister felt that the ‘broken up Oreo buttercream complimented the sponge well’.

Second prize went to Daniel Well, who baked a Chocolate Orange Marble Cake. Family feedback included ‘light and fluffy with a nice flavour of chocolate and orange’ and it ‘tasted great, nothing left on the plate’.

The judges gave third prize to Joy Ani for a birthday cake, whose parents agreed that it ‘tasted nice’.

The winners were all awarded vouchers and all other entrants also received a prize for their efforts and enthusiasm.
