Antonio Gallardo Delgardo is a first year IT student at Kingston College who is considering specialising in Cyber Security at university after he completes his course. Below he shares his experience so far at Kingston College:
Why you chose a BTEC? Why you chose Kingston College?
I had heard about Kingston College from a close friend of mine, and due to its proximity and location within Kingston it was suitable for me. I had been told that students have a more in-depth involvement in College activities which convinced me to apply.
What are you plans once you've finished your IT course?
Given the endless working opportunities Kingston College offers their academic students who are passionate about their craft, I plan to hopefully work in the field in a starting position within a company interested in my personal portfolio, and from then on, I would like to complete my education and specialise in Cyber Security at university.
Favourite part of your course?
My favourite part of the entire course is when we are puzzled by a misbehaving component in our work, for example in website development or databases, and all of us in the proximity are brainstorming the issue, trying to figure out what exactly is going on which often leads us into the funniest class moments.
Any opportunities you’ve enjoyed here that you particularly loved?
I had a work placement opportunity at Kingston Library where I helped the elderly and those who struggle with technology to aid with any task that they may require help with. It opens you to the real world, as you find people in situations where they need help, yet are stuck due to a technological barrier which became my job to mitigate. This made me proud of myself as not only do you get to help people who are struggling, you try your best to guide them so they won't need your help again.
Is College life what you expected? Have there been any surprises?
I was not quite sure what to expect, but I have not had any surprises so far, it is really an extension of high school where you get to work hard and be taught exactly what you will need for your future. You choose to go to College, so it is up to you to be responsible, it opens your mind slightly when you realise you are there by choice.
Any advice to those thinking about applying for your course?
Definitely go for it, if you wish to work in this industry due to its crucial involvement in the world's infrastructure and society nowadays, this is a very good opportunity to get started. The timetables are flexible, so you will still have time for yourself, and you explore a variety of IT fields through the 2 year course, gifting you a solid foundation to work upon as you elevate your understanding and knowledge of the IT world.
Any amazing tutors or met great new friends?
Both. No complaints towards any of my tutors, honestly. I wish I could have said the same through all my past years attending school. They are passionate, caring and very good communicators, all of them. But most importantly, I have met amazing new people to spend the breaks with.
