Level 3 year 1 and 2 Games Development students went on a trip to EGX Euro Gamer Convention at the ExCEL centre, London.

There was plenty to see and experience including all the latest games, consoles, computers, and other technological innovations such as VR headsets.

Students were able to view previews of new and upcoming games such as Sonic Superstars, Super Mario Wonder and Persona 5 Tactica. There were tournaments for Street Fighter and Tekken, Indie Developer Games and Classic Old Skool arcade machines to play on.

One of the games showcased ‘Make Way’ was developed by our very own Games Development lecturer David Ly who was the 3D artist for that title. Make way is a classic, Top-down multiplayer racing game where players build and race each other in a chaotic rush to the finish line. David’s game is coming out later this year so please check it out!

Our students were able to get to grips with Cutting edge gaming technology and learnt how Games are designed through industry talks and how they were released. They also had the opportunity to meet with universities representing the Games Development industry, this allowed them to ask a number of questions about what skills they would need to enter the industry and how to get a foot into an exceedingly difficult industry to break.

Although there were a few thousand people attending the conference, everyone managed to get a few goes on their favourite games.

Sadly, it was all over too quickly. Many Miles had been walked, Many Aliens and Space invaders destroyed, races won and goals scored. The day ended with tales of success, new high scores, and wishlists ringing throughout the conversations.

This event gave the students and staff accompanying them the chance to experience the full breadth and diversity of the gaming industry and explore the opportunities available to students looking for a career in this exciting area.

Art, Media, and Games Technician/ Instructor Ellie Main said:

“It was as ever a thoroughly enjoyable day for both students and staff, with lots of opportunities to witness new and contemporary technologies along with exciting lectures from industry specialists!”
