The Committee of South London Principals (COSLP) held their anuual Best Learner Awards on Thursday 19 May after a break of three long years to celebrate their very best learners and amazing teachers.

Student winner for Merton Adult Learning: Janet Zelenak

Janet Zelenak was away from education for 15 years before deciding to return and study for a Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools qualification. Her motivation for doing this was to make use of the experiences she has had with her 4-year-old son, who has autism and requires care and support.

Despite the challenges she faces, Janet will soon be completing her Level 2 Certificate. She has completed every assignment on time and to a very high standard, with exemplary attendance.

Janet consistently helps other adult learners, providing practical or emotional support and her positive and caring attitude always shines through. A very deserving winner!

Staff winner for Merton Adult Learning: Debra Valentine

Janet's tutor Debra Valentine has provided her with a great deal of support through the course - helping her to build reilience and self-esteem,

Debra makes all learning relevant to her students, asking them to draw on their own experiences and seeing teaching and learning as a two-way process.

Debra provides a social aspect to lessons which gives learners a break from challenges at home as well as a platform to discuss those challenges with others in similar situations. This supportive structure helps the mental health and wellbeing of all her students and she is a worthy winner of this award!
