On the afternoon of 3rd May 2019, our Level 1 Professional Cookery and Level 2 Food & Beverage students from our Hospitality & Catering Academy worked at the Wandsworth Young Chef Celebration Lunch for the Mayor of Wandsworth at the Taste Restaurant.
As part of the Young Chef Celebration Lunch, our Level 1 Professional Cookery students worked alongside the 2019 winner of the Wandsworth Young Chef, to prepare a delicious inspired three-course meal, under the guidance of Daksha Mistry, former Master Chef finalist and owner of Dakshas Gourmet Catering and our own Sandra. The food was served by Level 2 Food & Beverage students.
For the Young Chefs, the Celebration Lunch was an opportunity for them to put their skills gained from the cookery masterclasses to good use by working in a real professional kitchen, preparing food for a key local government official and his guests at a large-scale catering event.
Notable guests of the Mayor of Wandsworth in attendance for the lunch, included the Mayoress of Wandsworth, the Deputy Mayor of Wandsworth, Councillor Angela Graham, Nick Vadis (Compass Group), and the judges who took part in the cook-offs and finals, as well as well as family of the young chefs who took part in the competition.
The Mayor and his guests were highly impressed by dishes made by Young Chefs and our Level 1 Professional Cookery students, in addition making sure the dietary needs of the guests were met from their orders. Our Level 2 Food & Beverage students, they delivered first class service front and back of the house under the guidance of Daniel, Food & Beverage Service Lecturer.
It was to see the great working collaboration between our Level 1 Professional Cookery students and Young Chefs, was both teams demonstrated great enthusiasm and maturity as if they already been working as professional cooks for years.
Overall, the experience for all the students involved will prove valuable, as they can mention that they have worked a Mayoral event and in a professional kitchen of a leading catering college, under the guidance of a leading Chef, when deciding on further education courses in hospitality and catering after their GCSE's should they consider a career in the industry.
