In the fifth of our course spotlight stories, we spoke with Ruth - Engineering BTEC - Level 2. She shares her experiences on the course and career plans to beyond studying her course.
"I choose to study at Merton College, because of the positive atmosphere of the college; as well the look of the topics of on my course that I was going to study. Plus, I really like the teachers they seem really helpful.
I took the advice of my science teacher, who suggested I should do engineering. Therefore, I was curious to explore different areas of STEM, find out to know engineering was about & how it differs to Science. I also did not have many practical skills or experience, therefore, I was interested in learning how to build, fix & make things.
In terms of my first impressions of the College was, I really liked it, as I thought that the teachers were really reassuring they explain in detail what I would be studying & the combination topic in the subject sounds great.
With my course, I am learning new things, and not be afraid to tackle challenges & to learn be patience. They take a more holistic approach to learning & help me become more of a rounded person.
As for my tutors, I really like them as they are really helpful, patience & calm. They are always on hand to help. Most of all I like who I am becoming whilst doing the course & they really help in that process.
After my course, I am hoping to become to go into Geology someday however I am taking it one step at the time. For the moment I aim to study the next level of the course.
My advice for other potential students looking to enrol is to talk to the course tutors directly to find out what you will be studying, how you will be studying it. Look around the college, find out about the facilities on offer."
