Earlier this month, our Level 3 Business Extended Diploma students successfully completed their Career Ready programme. To celebrate the completion of their career development enrichment, our students attended a ceremony at London based international law legal firm Messrs Freshfields Brickhaus Deringer Law.
With Career Ready, they are a not-for-profit organisation designed to help young people unlock their potential in a level playing field. The company connects students aged between 14-18 years old, from local schools and FE Colleges, with employers based on career ambitions.
Following an introduction event, students are matched with a business mentor; who will support them during the programme, which includes participating in a variety of employer visits, attending employer-led masterclasses and then finally gaining a summer internship with a company.
Student inspired by the experience
Katie Brookes, one of our Level 3 Business students on the programme, delivered a speech on behalf of Career Ready and spoke passionately about her experience:
“I have had a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of the Career Ready program and I can truly say that it has made me as a person. The program involves masterclasses to help you with your CV, interview skills and how to communicate in the business world. It also provided me with a mentor from one of London’s leading companies, who helps prepare you for the world of work and has helped me gain an unconditional offer for my first choice of university and who has boosted my confidence massively. I had the amazing opportunity to take part in a summer internship with a world-leading corporate law firm of Freshfields that has over 270 years of experience globally. I joined their marketing and business development team, working with career driven, inspirational professionals who made me feel so welcome and have opened my eyes to what my future may hold. They also held trips for us for example to the royal courts of justice and Manchester to visit their second UK office.
We were given a real insight into the world of law and what it entails, not only what Is required to become a lawyer but the other professions that exist in a law firm. I am so grateful to now say that I am a graduate of the program and I would strongly encourage anyone thinking of joining the program to do so”.
Building upon success
Following the success of the first group to graduate from Career Ready, there are plans to engage more students from other courses at the College.
David Richards, Head of Employability for Carshalton College & Merton College, who lead in the association with Career Ready, said “I am hopeful during my discussions with Career Ready that we will be able to run this programme for our Business students in the future and hopefully open this up to other courses in Merton and from our sister college, Carshalton also".
On behalf of the College, congratulations to our Business students.
