On 31st January 2019, Dragados, a division of the ACS Group and one of the leading construction brands in Europe, were invited by the work experience team to come to Merton College to deliver a talk to our students on Engineering and Electrical Installation courses.
The main scope of the talk was to hear about career opportunities in the field of engineering and the company. The talk was attended by over 100 students, as well as Peter Mayhew-Smith (CEO of South Thames College Group), Jason Pemberton-Billing (Principal of Merton College), Nicola Laver (Head of School HECIT at Merton College), David Richards (staff technician) and Jeanette Bryant (WEX Coordinator at Carshalton College & Merton College).
Recently, Dragados won the bid to work on the re-vamp of Bank Underground Station, a project that is costing more than £600m.
Representing Dragados were from Zak Webster (Recruitment Manager), John Cumins (Construction Manager), Sergio Matias (Engineering Manager) and Chris Beal (Apprentice), of whom shared their insight what life is working with the company.
As a special thank you for their time, the representatives were invited to lunch at Taste Restaurant and were extremely impressed by both the service and quality of food. Following lunch, students had an informative presentation on all aspects of the Dragados engineering projects at present.
The key highlight of the afternoon was Chris Beal, an apprentice with Dragados; who gave an inspiring presentation on his life as an apprentice with the company.
At the end of the presentation, students came up with any questions for Dragados panel, from which the best questions were answered, as part of a mini-competition. Both Jessica Browne and Andre Prawl, each won a Fitbit for the best question and a further prize for answering a question put forward to our students from Dragados.
The event was well received by both staff and students at Merton College.
Jeanette Bryant, who arranged the talk, said, “I hope the students enjoyed the presentation and learnt a little bit about the life of an engineer. We will definitely be looking to startup a relationship with the company to help further the student’s skills into the engineering world.”
Following the presentation, the team from Dragados have saved some places for both our Merton College students, at their forthcoming Open Day on 23rd March.
