On the 15th June 2018 with a mixed ability squad of 8 players, the Skills for Working Life Merton football team travelled to Osterley Goals to take part in the 2nd annual ‘Our Barn Community Cup’ and play against 6 other local teams from West London.

The boys and girls from all teams competed in a mini league to find out who would finish in the top 2 and progress into the final, where one of the teams would be crowned this year’s winner.

After a great start to the tournament, winning our first 2 games 4-0 and 2-1, we lost our 3rd game 8-5 to last year’s winners. The 4th game was against the host and we battled to a 2-2 draw, only losing on penalties which drew a great save from the opposition goal keeper. We got back to winning ways in game 5 with a 5-1 win and due to the very hot weather, we were given a victory against our last team.

Winning 4 out of the 6 games meant that we made it into the final against the tournament host, ‘Our Barn FC’.

The SfWL Merton team shone in the final, with some fantastic saves from Samarasan, goals from David and 2 goals from Lewis. The SfWL Merton team ran out 3-0 winners to claim their first ‘Our Barn Community Cup’.

A special mention should go out to Fang Ket Lim and David Odulana.

Fang Ket played his first tournament for the team and was given the Merton Player of the Tournament Award.

David Odulana won the Community Champion Award for helping others and making sure that everyone in all teams were taking part and getting involved, encompassing the ethos of the day.
