“I chose to study at Merton because as soon as I entered the college I felt very welcomed by friendly and helpful staff. I have dyslexia so struggle with reading and writing, for me it was the only college I had attended that didn’t make me feel negative about my grades - I immediately knew this was the place I wanted to study at. There is a big difference between studying at a college and being at school. My tutors treat me as an adult and it makes the teacher-student relationship very pleasant.

My favourite part of the course is practical work, I love trying new things and I learn better with a Kinaesthetic style learning. I have benefitted from a few opportunities that Merton College has to offer, one being work placements. My tutor helped me find a placement near to the college and my home, which I loved and it eventually turned into a part time job. My greatest memory was in Level 1, where we had to do a story board and make it come to life. I really enjoyed putting all my ideas together, such as the makeup, hair and dressing the model up. Merton College really takes the time to provide extra learning for students with learning difficulties and, as a result, my grades in Maths and English have improved massively. I now feel more confident to answer questions and get involved in the lessons. I plan to continue my course and progress on to Level 3. I would also like to do a course in Barbering to expand my knowledge and cater to everyone. I would definitely recommend joining Merton College. My tips are to make sure you attend all the lesson and do not worry about what other students are doing within lessons, just focus on your own success.”
