Introduction

You'll learn the specialist skills and techniques to make and repair your own violin. This practical course will give you a high level of hand skills to create violins of different styles. As you progress, you'll be expected to make at least two instruments in the violin family. You'll have the chance to follow your own ideas and interests to create a violin in a style of your choice.

Topics include:

  • Working with wood
  • Use and maintenance of tools
  • Selecting and using abrasives and adhesives
  • How to read drawings and mark out.

Materials

These are included in the course fee though you might want to buy your own tools to help you practise and develop at home. Talk to a tutor for more information about this.

Assessment

The tutor will give you feedback throughout your course.

Entry Requirements

None, though you'll need a sufficient level of English to understand as the tutor explains techniques.

Next Steps

It could take you two years or more to complete an instrument depending on your experience and how quickly you pick up the skills needed. Because of this you might want to re-enrol on the course to finish your violin as previous students have done. We also offer advanced violin making and repair courses.
