Introduction

You'll learn the specialist skills and techniques to make your own violin. This practical course will give you a high level of hand skills to create violins of different styles. As you progress, you'll be expected to make at least one instrument. You'll have the chance to follow your own ideas and interests to create a violin in a style of your choice.

Topics include:

  • Working with wood
  • Use and maintenance of tools
  • Essential drawing and sketching skills
  • Basic metalwork and the making of small tools

Materials

There is a fee to pay for the timber you'll use to make your first instrument. You might want to buy your own tools to help you practise and develop at home. Talk to a tutor for more information about this.

Assessment

The tutor will give you feedback throughout your course.

Entry Requirements

None, though you'll need a sufficient level of English to understand as the tutor explains techniques.
