Introduction

This one-day workshop provides a supportive environment for those starting a small business (e.g. cake decorating, soft furnishing, clothes making or any creative subject) to enable you to become effective at managing self-employment.

You'll study topics including:

  • Getting organized
  • Preparing an invoice
  • Tracking your business e.g. which clients have paid? How much do they owe?
  • Working out income and outgoings of the business
  • Understanding tax and the self-employed e.g. taxable profit and deductible expenses.

Materials

There may be materials you need to help with your studies. You'll either make a one-off payment for these when you enrol, or you'll buy them during the course. Your tutor will talk to you about this at interview or in your first class (if you don't need an interview).

Depending on your course and circumstances, you may be able to get funding to help with materials fees. Please check with us when you come in for interview or enrolment.

Your tutor will give you regular feedback and there will be opportunities to share ideas with the class.
