Introduction

This course will teach you the sewing skills you need to make your own clothes to a high standard and how to start your own business.

By the end of the course you'll be able to:

  • Thread and use a sewing machine and overlocker to sew seams

  • Identify types of paper patterns and suitable fabric

  • Read a paper pattern and lay, pin and cut out fabric

  • Complete sample seams and hand sewn finishes

  • Understand how to make a simple garment. 
  • Help and support with starting a small business with no previous experience. 
  • Gain the knowledge and confidence to make decisions and make a success of your business.

Materials

You'll need to bring your own sewing box, patterns, fabrics, interlinings and linings. Your tutor will give you a list of exactly what you need to get in your first class. If you have no existing equipment, there may be a charge to cover this cost. There are sewing machines, overlockers, irons and metal rulers you can use at the College.

Assessment

Your tutor will give you feedback and advice. You'll also complete self assessment and homework.

This course will provide you with plenty of skills that would be useful on a fashion, clothesmaking or sewing course. You can further your knowledge by taking another course at the College.
